Springfield Mourns Slain Police Officer

The city of Springfield is in mourning after Monday's shooting death of a 36 year veteran of the police force.  Police Commissioner William Fitchett says officer Kevin Ambrose responded to a domestic call, and was shot twice by a prison guard from New York City, 35 year old Sean Bryan.  Ambrose was responding to a call from Bryan's girlfriend, 29 year old Charlene Mitchell, who said Bryan was threatening her.  Police say after shooting the officer, Bryan shot his girlfriend, who is in critical condition, then turned the gun on himself.  Officer Ambrose leaves behind a wife, two children, and one grandchild.  Ambrose is the 15th Springfield police officer to be killed in the line of duty, and the first officer killed on the job in more than 27 years.
