Anti-Walmart Activists Seek Zone Change

(Holyoke, MA) — In the wake of a divisive Walmart controversy, activists are seeking a zoning change in Holyoke. They want a site on Whiting Farms Road changed from General Business to Industrial Park zoning. The land owned by Holyoke Gas & Electric is near the Holyoke Mall but adjacent to a residential neighborhood. A petition to change the zoning was presented to the City Council Tuesday. Last month Walmart withdrew controversial plans to build a Supercenter at the site, saying there were problems with soil contamination.
