Controversial Leverett Gravel Pit to Expand

A controversial gravel pit in Leverett has been given the OK to expand by five acres.  The ten year special permit granted to Richard Roberts contains numerous conditions.  Neighbors of the Long Plain Road operation have complained the pit creates a nuisance and a hazard.  The Zoning Board issued the permit in part to forestall a lawsuit filed by Roberts against the town.
