Daley and Halligan Story Staged As Opera

(Northampton) – The story of Daley and Halligan, two itinerant Irish laborers hanged in Northampton for a crime they didn’t commit in 1806 is coming the stage in Northampton this weekend. Former Judge Mike Ryan says the two have long since been exonerated of the crime..but their legacy is enduring. The opera entitled “The Garden of Martyrs” was conceived by two professors from Amherst College and Umass. Kevin Rhodes, music director of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, serves as the opera’s conductor and musical director. It’s being performed Friday night and Sunday afternoon at the Academy of Music in Northampton.
