(Holyoke, MA) — The Holyoke YMCA is now free to demolish the Farr Mansion. On Wednesday a six-month demolition delay imposed by the Historical Commission expired. The Y wants to tear down the old brick building to make a parking lot for its downtown facility. A group of preservationists have been trying to save the 1901 Victorian. The Y can now tear the building down but they still need a zoning change to build a parking lot.
The plan, which also mandates a shift to renewable energy from coal-fired electricity, is meant to put the U.S. in a strong position at international talks in Paris later this year on reaching a deal to curb global warming.
