NAACP To Sarno: Widen Search For Police Chief

(Springfield, MA) — The Springfield NAACP is asking Mayor Domenic Sarno to conduct a nationwide search for the city’s next police commissioner. Chief William Fitchet is retiring this year, and Sarno is considering three deputy chiefs for an internal promotion. NAACP president Talbert Swan says a search committee should evaluate candidates and send a list of finalists to the mayor. Sarno tells the “Springfield Republican” there’s enough in-house talent to find the next chief, and that the selection process is up to him.
