WHMP "Heavy Petting" Pet of the Week from Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society

Our WHMP Pet of the Week is Ricky, a 2 year old male Orange Tabby.  Here's his story:

Ricky is a very talkative and fun guy.  He came to Dakin when the new baby arrived and there was little time to give him.  He is described by his former family as a cat who, in addition to having a lot to say, is friendly to everyone…in fact he LOVES all people.  He is playful (his catnip piggy was a favorite toy) and yet enjoys the life of a lap cat too.  He loves to have his belly rubbed.  How many cats can say that?!  His best quality they say – Ricky is very sweet!

Ricky tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus.  Cats who are FIV+ can live normal lives with normal life spans with only a few special considerations:  A good quality food, routine veterinary care, and they must be indoor only kitties.

FIV is not contagious to humans or any other species of animals.  It is a cat- to- cat virus usually caused as the result of a severe bite wound from an infected cat.  And while FIV is not a virus casually passed from cat to cat through mutual grooming or shared food bowls, we at Dakin err on the side of caution and only place our FIV+ in homes where they will be the only cat or with another FIV+ kitty.

By the way, Toes…who looks just like Ricky…is also FIV+ and awaiting adoption.  And great news…FIV+ kitties are FEE WAIVED for adopters!
