No Split Tax Rate for Greenfield

Greenfield taxpayers will continue to pay one tax rate for at least the next year.  After a two and a half hour debate Thursday night, the Town Council voted against splitting the rate in order to charge businesses a higher rate.  The measure's chief proponent was Vice Council Vice President Mark Wisnewski who said it would lower the burden on residential taxpayers.  But Precinct One Councilor Marian Kelner said charging businesses a higher rate would have a severe impact on them.  A number of councilors say they support bringing the issue in front of Greenfield voters as a non-binding ballot question, possibly as early at this Summer.
