White Collar Crack Down

An embezzler from Amherst has been ordered to pay back a portion of what she stole.  46-year-old Elizabeth Walsh was former treasurer of the Amherst-Pelham Education Association.  Over six years she wrote checks to herself to the tune of 116-thousand dollars.  In court last week she was ordered to cough up another nine-thousand to supplement the 66-K she's already paid back.  Insurance paid the difference.

The Northwestern DA's office is ramping up its financial crimes unit.  That's according to the "Daily Hampshire Gazette."  DA David Sullivan said fraud and embezzlement are on the rise, and he wants his prosecutors to meticulously follow the paper trail.  To that end, an experienced forensic fraud examiner has been hired to support those efforts.  Sullivan says his team is investigating a dozen cases involving more than a million dollars.
