Franklin County’s fare-free bus system is now being held up as a model for the rest of the country. Ridership on FRTA fixed routes has climbed since fares were eliminated, and a new bill from Senator Ed Markey and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley would create a $5 billion federal grant program to help more transit systems go fare-free.
