Families in Northampton are scrambling to find childcare after Smith College announed it’s closing its Fort Hill Early Childhood Education Center next June. The center has operated for a hundred years and currently serves about 80 children. Roughly 30 staff positions are also at risk. Parents are questioning the timing of the closure amid ongoing union negotiations. Smith says the decision was not financially motivated and plans to expand childcare benefits for employees.
